Oh yeah, MAD PROPS to RUBEN Desert Motorworks. That's another $500 the stealership didn't take. Thanks to all the guys who posted and those who set out the DIY. Draining coolant from the block is a B*TCH :banghead:Īll in all, a pretty annoying DIY if you're including the coolant change. On the radiator hoses, there are little C-rings that can he pried off with a screw driver to help get the hoses off. Be careful taking off the metal clip the secures the connector harness to the thermostat. Disconnect the 2 fan connectors, flipped some snaps at the bottom of the fan, and it came out pretty easy. On my 2001 manual 5 speed 330ci, the fan is held on by 1 Torx screw and 1 body pin that can be pried out. Draining coolant from the block is a B*TCH There were some points that weren't so clear in the DIY I searched through. But next time around I'm probably just going to drain the radiator. The thermostat replacement was pretty easy, especially for a manual. So I guess the coolant change is what put the bad taste in my mouth. Luckily I set a large spill pan under the car. And wow, don't even bother putting a catch can, it just spews all over the place. A nice little finger ratchet would've been better, if you can torque it. There isn't any room to actually maneuver. Getting the ratchet in there was a TOUGH fit, even with a swivel head, and took a lot of luck to actually get the drain plug off. I don't think that was emphasized enough in the DIY's I researched. Reaching that bolt to drain coolant from the block was a B*TCH. Granted, the actual replacing of the thermostat was easy, but I lumped it with a full coolant change and that was a B*TCH. It was pretty easy and extremely difficult at the same time. So I finished replacing the thermostat today. Troubleshoot and read into it ahead of time.Įdit: If you're gonna replace the thermostat a coolant flush is a MUST with that code, don't try to keep the pipes up, just drain it. It could be the thermostat, it could be a sensor, or something more simple. I'm not saying don't change your thermostat, I'm saying don't change it unless you're sure that's the problem (unless you have extra money to waste). If anyone has something to add or to correct, please do, I just listed the most "obvious" symptoms, but there's more. Mine takes 25 secs to a minute for the rpm to drop and 5 miles of driving for the temperature to get up. If it goes bad open (and never closes), you'll have higher idle rpm, and it'll take your car a lot longer to warm up. If it goes bad while it's closed (and never opens), your car will overheat and your cooling fan will start to run continuously. Second is you might have the coolant issue like I did. If you parked outside, and your car's frozen solid and it takes it longer to heat up it "MIGHT" trip off the sensor, not likely though. In my opinion, you might get that code in one of three common cases. It closes when you start the car to keep it from going into the radiator and slowly opens up when it's up to operating temperature. The purpose of the thermostat is to warm up the coolant.
